CCFL or LED?
There are generally two types of LCD screens (liquid crystal display):
CCFL (cold cathode fluorescent lamp)LED light emitting diode.
Older laptop models can come with both types of screen, to avoid ordering the incorrect screen, you should try and identify which screen your laptop has before placing an order. Each screen listed on our website features the specification detail, so you can check if it’s an LED or CCFL screen before placing an order.
CCFL screens
CCFL screens will have a FL (fluorescent lamp) tube to provide light (backlight) to the display, this is similar to a fluorescent tube. They are powered by a small circuit board called an inverter. CCFL screens will have two cables with a white plug which connects to the inverter.
LED screens
LED screens have LED backlights and don’t require an inverter.
How do I know which type of screen I require?
You can use the search function on our website to find the screen you require by entering the part number. You can find the part number by removing the old screen, the part number will be on the back of the screen and will normally be displayed as xxx154xxxx. This number will specify which size of the screen. So a part number xxx154xxxx would indicate that a 15.4" screen is required.
Dell CCFL screens
Older Dell CCFL screens feature a special firmware and normally come complete with an inverter. You can use the search function on our website to search for the Dell model you need. You can also match the resolution of your old screen to the spec sheet on our website. If you are unsure, please contact us and we will be happy to help you.
Do I need a new screen?
To decide if you need a new screen, we have listed the most common problems.
Cracked screen
A new screen should solve this, but the majority of cracked screens will still work. If your screen no longer works, there is possibly another fault with your system.
No display
If you screen is not displaying anything, you should try testing the motherboard by plugging it into the external video or HDMI (high-definition multimedia interface) port. If you can view a display the fault will either be with the screen or video cable. If you require a video cable you should try and order this directly from the manufacturer.
Dim screen
This is a very rare screen problem. If your old screen is a CCFL screen (with an inverter and two small wires from the bottom with a white plug on the end) it’s normally the inverter which is faulty.
If you have an LED screen, it’s normally a motherboard fuse fault. This fuse can also blow when fitting a new screen if you don’t remove the power or battery, so you should make sure you do this before attempting to fit the new screen.
Flickering
This is normally caused by a fault with the cable connecting the motherboard to the screen but it can also be the screen. You should try moving the cable.
Lines
Lines can be either a cable or screen fault.
What screen resolution do I require?
Screens are available in different resolutions, so you should purchase the same resolution as your old screen. If your old screen still works, you can find the old resolution in the Microsoft Windows display properties.
Although possible on some models, we do not recommend trying to change the screen resolution. However, if you can view multiple resolution options for your laptop on our website it may be possible to change the resolution, please contact us to find out more.
Can I fit the screen myself?
Our screens can be easily fitted by yourself. If you need help, there are many videos available to view online.
What if the screen I require is not available?
We can ship 100%-part number compatible screens. If the screen you require is not available as it has been replaced with a newer model, we will provide you with a compatible model.
